Shelf Life - How to make a Palette Shelf

Not long after moving into our new abode, I set about creating a set of palette shelves to dot around the flat and store all of the essentials, see toothbrushes and strange vase. When I say 'I,' it is largely misleading as Red did most  all of the work, I did try and help though...

Take one hunk, or failing that find a strapping ginger man. Take a palette which, providing you have asked or can run fast, you can get for free from businesses ordering lots of bulky items. In an open, airy space begin sawing the palette and go as far as you would like the shelf to be. This proved quite a work out when I very kindly tried to saw the palette, but to no avail. Alas...

Cheers your efforts so far! There's probably a law saying that you shouldn't operate a saw whilst having a cherry beer, but I chose to ignore it.

With a claw hammer, carefully pull one of the top planks of wood away from the palette until completely removed. You can then re-hammer the plank underneath the palette, to form the bottom of the shelf like this...

Comprende? Then, if a bit mucky you can wash off the dirt to scrub it up nice and clean. We don't want no scrubs...

Or just give it a swift brush. The boiler suit is completely unnecessary, as is the hat, but I wanted to feel like I was contributing in some way...

Outside, lightly sand the wood down until the edges are smooth and varnish to ensure the shelves are waterproof. This is great if you choose to put them up in the bathroom as the varnish ensures they won't go mouldy. To prettify them, add some Washi Tape (my old friend), et finito!

These shelves are an easy, cheap alternative if you're a bit strapped for cash and are the ideal hosts for toothbrushes when you're best friend comes to stay...
